MANA LOMI™ SCHOOL

Dr. Maka’ala Yates and HHA is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing education provider.

The central philosophy of lomilomi is that each person is equally Devine in every aspect—body, mind & soul. The concept of evaluating the constitution of the whole person and its imbalances allows the lomi practitioner to look at each patient as a unique individual.

This two week intensive program is designed for those that want to accelerate the learning process on Hawaiian healing especially using lomilomi. This is held only once per year in Hawaii and includes lomi 1, 2, stones, some joint mobilization techniques, a Hawaiian sweat, ho’oponopono, Hawaiian meditation, Hawaiian healing chants and clinical experience using techniques learnt. The maximum amount of students allowed is 16 so that an ideal ratio of students to teacher and assistants can be achieved.

Week One: Lomi I & Lomi’ili’ili

Clinical Hawaiian Massage
This segment includes topics such as clinical procedures of lomilomi, chair techniques, ho’oponopono (realignment) concepts, the history of lomilomi & Hawaiian healing chants.

Lomi’ili’ili (Hawaiian Hot Stone Therapy)
This intensive training invites you to experience the traditional and ancient Hawaiian art form of hot stone therapy that is specific to the individual’s needs. Each student will learn how to collect stones using proper protocols, how to heat the stones and control the temperature, and how to clean the stones.

Lomi‘ili’ili, which literally means “flat stones in motion,” have been used in Hawaii for hundreds of years to treat the many levels of healing necessary to help restore balance in the mind-body-soul.

Each student will learn the three basic formats using hot stones. This training is more than just laying of stones onto the patient. It is specific to the individual’s needs and it focuses on transitions!

Week Two: Lomi 2
Three main protocols will be studied in this intensive class to better handle potentially difficult physical maladies using specific techniques. The following topics will also be covered:
  • Low Back Pain
  • Neck & Shoulders
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Pelvic Region (i.e., sciatica)
  • Healing Chants
  • Sprained Ankles
  • Hot Towels
  • Homework for Clients
  • 'Ohana (family concepts)

Also, the scientific approach with lomilomi (i.e., muscle spindle fibers & GTO receptors) from an ancient Hawaiian perspective will be briefly covered.
